Shortly after 1:00 o'clock Wednesday (sic - Tues.) afternoon, October 13th, at his home, 124 Benton street, occurred the death of George W. Striker, a well known and highly esteemed resident and business man of the city for many years. Death was due to cancer of the bowels with which he had been afflicted for some time. About two months ago he was taken seriously ill and later was taken to the hospital where an operation was performed in the hopes of prolonging his life, but to no avail. The funeral services will be held from the home at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Brownson, pastor of the Baptist church. The Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges of the city will attend in a body. Burial in East Linwood cemetery.
George William Striker was born in Stockbridge, Ingham Co, Michigan May 6, 1842, and was in his sixty seventy year at the time of his death. He grew to young manhood in his native state and came to Iowa in 1860, locating first at Cedar Falls. October 21, 1871 he was married to Miss Sarah Slaughter at Iowa Falls. He was engaged for many years as a traveling salesman. Dring Mr. Farrow's first term as mayor he was appointed chief of police and again by mayor Goodson, and was ever a faithful and efficient officer. Later he engaged in the marble business integrity and enjoyed the fullest esteem and confidence of all. He leaves to mourn his death, his widow and two daughters, Winnifred, wife of C.M. Perrine and Helen at home to whom is given the sincere sympathy of a host of friends in their bereavement.
