STOLEN CAR WRECKED; TWO DEAD OF INJURIES

Three Other Occupants To Face Theft Charge

Forest Evans, 27 years old, and Alfred Crandall, 19, are dead, and three other Galena young men are in the Crawford county jail in Girard to answer a charge of car theft as the result of an automobile accident early Sunday morning on the Military road, four miles north of Riverton.

The accident occurred when a Pierce-Arrow car, which had been stolen from John Bunyan of Pittsburg Saturday night in Pittsburg, plunged off the road and turned over several times. The car is reported to have been traveling at a speed of 93 miles an hour prior to the accident.

Evans, who resides west of Galena near the Ryan's bridge, died in St. John's hospital in Joplin at 9:45 o'clock Sunday morning. His death was the result of cerebral hemorrhage and internal injuries.

Crandall was thrown from the car into the adjoining field by the road and died from head injuries at St. John's hospital at 1:45 o'clock Sunday afternoon.

The other occupants of the car, now in jail, were not seriously injured. They are William Keating, Ralph Caudell and Henry Swain.

Evans, is reported to have been driving the car at the time of the accident. He is said to have apparently tried to slow the car and applied the brakes but that the car swerved, went off the road and rolled over four times.

All occupants of the car, except Evans, had grouped themselves three years ago as the "Diamond-X gang," according to Chief of Police Mack Elliott.

Elliott arrested Swain and Caudell Sunday afternoon at their homes here and they later were taken to the Girard jail.

Caudell is a nephew of Wilbur Underhill, recently slain bandit, according to Chief of Police Ross Armstrong of Pittsburg.

Keating was arrested here by Night Officers Ben Moody and James Gaw when he was brought to Galena Sunday morning in the ambulance of the Clark Undertaking company, which also received the bodies of the dead men.

Evans is survived by his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Evans.

His funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon from the chapel of the Clark Undertaking company in charge of the Rev. J. O. Derfelt.

Burial was in Hillcrest cemetery.

Funeral services for Crandall were held at 4 o'clock this afternoon from the Clark chapel in charge of the Rev. Dow Booe.

Burial was in Hillcrest cemetery.

Crandall is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bessie Crandall, West Seventh street; a brother, Harvey Crandall, and two sisters.

According to Chief of Police Armstrong of Pittsburg the three Galena men now in the Girard jail will be charged with car theft.
