What does the love of the colors red and pink, cotton balls, family historian and an immaculate house have in common? Helen Christine (Decker) Legg. On Sunday, July 2, 2017 Helen Legg passed on to be with her beloved husband and son. Born on October 7, 1919 in the state of Kansas, then moved to Hayward in 1959 where Helen lived to the age of 97 years old. Helen was the last surviving sibling of 8 brothers and two sisters.

Helen meet Kenneth Legg and fell in love against the family's wishes, so she packed up and ran off to Oklahoma, where they were married in 1935. During their 47 years of marriage they raised one son, Kenneth "Tuffy" who was born in 1937. Helen loved to be a stay at home mother and wife, keeping a clean home and raising her son was her mission in life. Her husband, Kenneth loved for her to wear red, so most days she wore red and even drove a red car. After his death she changed her wardrobe to pink, pink earrings, pink jacket, (you get the idea).

While raising her family in Dodge City, Kansas, Helen made new friendships and developed a relationship with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita. She and her husband, Kenneth moved the family to Hayward, California in 1959. In 1962 St. Rose opened it door to care for patients of the community. To Helen's delight the Sisters of St Joseph of Wichita sponsored the hospital. Helen knew many of the sister so her relationship continued throughout the years. Helen was the first patient at St Rose and she went on to volunteering in their auxiliary for years.

Helen loved her family and always worried about them no matter how far away they were to Hayward. Helen lived alone and kept a spotless house until a slip and fall several months ago. She was proud of this fact, even her last visitors the Firefighters arriving for a 911 call comments on the cleanliness of her apartment. This brought a smile to her face when she was told of the firefighters comment.

So what about the cotton balls, Helen insisted on placing cotton balls in her ears for the past 45 years, as the air bothered her ears from a long history of ear infections as a child. Family will never be able to look at a cotton balls without warm, loving thoughts of this wonderful women.

Helen is survived by her Daughter in Law, Frances Legg, Nephew Bob Decker and a large family extending over the United States and Japan.

The family would like to thank Vio and George from Fairbanks Home Care and Hope Hospice for their loving care in her final days.
