August Karl, Pauline and their children emigrated from East Prussia to the United States on the ship Gellert in 1880. They embarked on the ship at Hamburg, and arrived at New York after a stop in Le Havre, France. From New York, they traveled by train to Houston, Texas or Brookshire, Texas without knowing a word of English. They lived in the barn of their sponsor for about a year before they were able to buy their own farm in Pattison, Texas.
