Damon Runyon Jr. Falls to Death from Park Span
Washington DC-Damon Runyon Jr., son of the flamboyant newsman and author of the roaring twenties, Damon Runyon; fell to his death from a park bridge here Sunday. The District of Columbia coroner ruled Monday the death was a suicide. Runyon, 48, less successful than his father, was dead on arrival at Georgetown University Hospital 15 minutes after he plunged from the P Street Bridge in Rock Creek Park, police said. His 52-foot fall into a shallow creek was witnessed by scores of people lounging at the "P Street Beach", a popular gathering place for Washington's hippie community. Runyon began his career 32 years ago with the old International News Service. Last October he became a feature writer for the D.C. Examiner, a Washington paper. Survivors include his widow, Patricia, a son and a daughter, all of Cincinnati, Ohio.
