Monday morning at 10 o'clock from the church of the Sacred Heart in Boone was held the funeral of Dennis Deegan. Rev. Father Barron, pastor of the church, had charge of the services and the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. Deceased was about 76 years of age and was formerly a resident of Boone. He was an old time locomotive engineer and handled a throttle on the Northwestern out of Boone for many years. About fourteen years ago he retired and went to Webb City, Mo, where he has since made his home with his daughter, Mrs. E.M. Harlan at whose home death occurred.
The remains arrived in Boone Sunday and were taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Eamer, 1004 Carroll street, where they remained until the funeral hour.
Dennis Deegan was born in Tipperary, Ireland, 1842. He came to Canada at the age of ten, residing there for twenty five years where he married Mary Pedden in 1862. Eight children were born of this marriage. Later he came to the United States, residing a different states, settling at last in Iowa.
He was employed by the C. & N.W. railway, serving in different capacities and finally as engineer. Because of injuries he received while at work he was obliged to retire about nineteen years ago.
In April (1916) he was stricken with paralysis which resulted in death Friday, October 12th, while at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M.E. Harlan in Webb City, Mo.
Mr. Deegan's wife died six years ago. Since that time he has made his home with his daughters. Six daughters survive him. Mrs. E.M. Harlan, Webb City, MO; Mrs. George Eamer, Sr. Boone, Iowa; Mrs. A.E. Blythe, Ogden, Iowa; Mrs. Elizabeth Tillit, Los Angeles, Cal.; Mrs. F.F. Merrill, Tacoma Wash; Mrs. Ira Shaw, Boone, Iowa; also seventeen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A granddaughter, Mrs. H. I. Moorehouse of Des Moines attended the funeral, and Mrs. E. M. Harlan of Webb City, Mo. And her daughter, Mrs. B.D. Hubbard of Joplin Mo., accompanied the remains to Boone.
