Baker, Gary Preston, 76, of Tulsa, died Tuesday, July 28, 2015, after a long illness.

Gary was born in Winfield, KS, to Harold Ingram and Bernice Irene Jackson Baker. After graduating high school in Council Grove, KS, Gary earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Washburn University in Topeka. Later in life he earned his Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Oklahoma in 1997.

Gary married Marilyn Ann Mills on June 23, 1963. She predeceased him in 2006. Together they are survived by two sons: Derek [Alan] Baker of Yonkers, NY and Michael [Preston] Baker of Tulsa. Gary is also survived by his sister, JoAnn Baker Rodgers of Tecumseh, KS; by his son-in-law, Tom Wesdorp of Yonkers, NY; by his daughter-in-law, Leigh Shaw Baker of Tulsa; and by his granddaughter, Blythe Baker of Tulsa.

Gary began his career at WIBW-TV in Topeka; he moved to Tulsa in 1966 to work for Phillips Advertising Agency, where he rose to the position of president of that firm, directing the work of its five offices located in Oklahoma, Texas, and California. With colleague, Jerry Anderson, he formed Anderson Baker Advertising in 1974. As a creative director, Gary created memorable advertising for a number of iconic Tulsa businesses in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s: the F&M Bank and Trust Co.; Tink's Auto Mart; the Metro Diner; Dickason-Goodman Fine Furniture; Frankoma Pottery; Trippets Shoes, and many others. Later in his career, he led the marketing functions of Florafax, a floral wire company, and Mays Drugstores/Drug Warehouse.

Gary was an active member of John Knox Presbyterian Church for nearly half a century. He was elected an ordained ruling elder by the congregation several times, as well as a member of its boards of deacons and trustees. In addition, at various times, he served as a Sunday School teacher, a high school fellowship sponsor, and as a baritone in the John Knox choir.

Over the course of his lifetime, his other musical interests included the trombone, the flute, the violin, and the hammered dulcimer. Except for the objections of his wife Marilyn, his practice lessons almost included the Scottish bagpipes as well. This proscription remained in effect by the family after her death.

A memorial service for Gary will be held the 26th of September, 2015, John Knox Presbyterian Church, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to Clarehouse at clarehouse.org, a ministry for which the family expresses its profound gratitude.
