Upper Arlington, Ohio (AP)--- The bodies of an Upper Arlington couple and two of their children were found in their home late Wednesday in what police said was an apparent murder-suicide.
Another child survived by running from the house, police said.
Police said Patty Bolin, 40, shot her husband, Ronald, 43; daughter Tamela Jean, 12, and son, Todd Matthew, 9, before she took her life in their ranch-style residence in this wealthy Columbus suburb.
Officer Thomas French said Mrs. Bolin attempted to kill a third child, Alicia Ann, 15, when the teenager returned home, but the gun misfired. The girl ran to a neighbor's house and police were called.
Mrs. Bolin, Tamela and Todd were dead at the scene. Her husband died early today.
The victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Franklin County Coroner William Adrion said.
French said police were called to the house about 6 p.m. Wednesday. When he went to the front door at the darkened house, French said, he saw part of Bolin's body through a window.
"I shined my flashlight through the bay window for a look and she (Mrs. Bolin) pointed the gun at me."
The officer said he ducked alongside the window when he saw the woman put the gun to her head and heard it fire.
The children's bodies were found in the family room and kitchen, the boy still wearing a winter coat and hat.
Neighbors could offer no explanation for the incident, and one described the Bolins as "an ideal family."
Bolin was the founder and president of Riverside Design Co.
