Mary was a product of the Portsmouth Public School System where she graduated from I.C. Norcom in the 1950s. She later attended Shaw University where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. When Mary started her teaching career, she chose to go back to where it all started which was in the Portsmouth Public School System. Her love for children was unique. Mary was overjoyed that she could help nurture, mold, and inspire children in the thirty-five years of her devoted educational service.
Mary was an active member of Mount Hermon Baptist Temple in Portsmouth, Virginia. She was active in a number of ministries such as the Founder of Christian Education and Lay Women, Trustee Aid, Faith Club member and a dedicated Adult Women's Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher. Later she relocated to Olive Branch Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia where she continued to be an active member. There Mary was a dedicated member of Christian Education, Vacation Bible School teacher and a member of the Deaconess and Missionary Ministry.
Mary was predeceased by two sets of parents, Mary and Eugene Hill and Carolyn and Isaac Daughtry. Three brothers; Eugene, Walter, and Jonah Hill. Sister-in-law; Pearl Sands and several aunts and uncles who loved her dearly.
Continuing to cherish precious memories is the love of her life, husband of 63 years, Nathaniel Brooks; daughter, La Cretia White of Portsmouth, Virginia; grandson, Isaac White of Chesapeake, Virginia; brother, John Hill (Cornia) of El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Dorothy H. Stephens (Authur/deceased) of Tega Cay, South Carolina; Carolyn H. Seagraves (Sherwood, Sr.) of Chesapeake, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Shirley B. Day (Wilton) of Tampa, Florida; three godchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
