Another pioneer citizen of Henderson county was claimed by death Wednesday when J.D. Horn, well known and beloved resident of the Shelby Chapel community died within a few hours after he was stricken with paralysis. Mr. Horn was in apparent good health and was preparing to come to the city when he was stricken about 8:30. He died at 11:45.

Funeral services were held at Shelby Chapel church at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon with burial at Bethel cemetery. Rev. S.L. Terry conducted the funeral.

The following were designated as active pallbearers: A.S. Ford, W.A. Walker, C.H. Coleman, A.F. Wood, Lee Dean, A.W. Sides, Dave Broom, Tommie Caldwell, John Foster and Joel Lusk. A large number of honorary pallbearers were named.

Jeff Decal Horn was 71 years of age. He was born in Fort Metcalf, Alabama in 1861. He came to Texas in 1880, settling in the LaRue section. In 1888 he moved to the Shelby Chapel community where he resided continuously except for one year when he moved to West Texas in the interest of his wife's health.

Mr. Horn was united in marriage to Miss Susan Ella Shelby at LaRue in 1884. She preceded him in death some years ago. Eight children were born to the couple.

Although his wife died some years ago Mr. Horn remained on the old home place with his children, gave them all a splendid education and all grew to honorable men and women.

He was the type of citizen that Henderson county can ill afford to lose and his going will be mourned by all who knew him.

Surviving him are the following children: Mrs. M.J. Cox of Athens; Mrs. H.T. Tidmore of Mercedes; J.N. Horn of Vannery, Ca.; Mrs. E.W. Harton of Athens; Mrs. J.B. Frizzell of Athens; Rollin J. Horn of Palestine; Henry and Walter Horn of San Angelo. All the children except J.N. and Mrs. Tidmore were able to come to the funeral. One sister, Mrs. Mollie Kite of Alabama also survives.

Mr. Horn was a staunch member of the Presbyterian church. He was a charter member as well as elder in the Shelby Chapel church and gave the land on which the present edifice now stands.
