MRS. MAGGIE WEST GREEN
Neosho residents, and especially those who had seen Mrs. Maggie West-Green about her usual activities each day, were shocked to hear that her death occurred unexpectedly Saturday morning shortly after four o'clock, at her home, 604 South Jefferson street. Born in this county, Mrs. West-Green had regarded Neosho as "home." She was married in her youth to John William West, that marriage being terminated by the death of Mr. West in 1936. In 1938, Mrs. West was married to the Rev. Winter Green, lifelong friend whose death occurred in 1940. Since the death of Mr. Green she spent the winters with relatives in California and Texas, returning here for summers.
Devoted to the Baptist church, she was a member of the First Baptist church here, and for many years was teacher of a Sunday school class in that church, and also served as organist. She was teacher of the Bethany class in a Baptist church in Houston, Tex., and one of the many messages of condolence sent to a niece, Mrs. Edna Bell Spencer of Houston, who flew here after receiving news of the aunt's death, came from this class. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Neosho chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a member of the Past Matrons' Club.
Surviving relatives include six nephews: John J. Bell, New York City, Hubert Bell, Fall River Ore.; Joe Hewlett , also of Oregon; Dr. D. L. Bell, Monahans, Tex.; Paul V. Bell, Tulsa, Okla; Charles Bell, Boone Colo.; and seven nieces: Pearl Bell, Oregon; Mrs. Maude Carlon, Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Grace Ferris, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Edna Bell Spencer, Houston, Tex; Mrs. Helen Bell Paige, Washington, D. C.; Mrs. Lela Marie Ruble, Chicago, and Mrs. Ann McAllister, Tulsa, Okla.
Funeral services were conducted in the First Baptist church at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon, the Rev. Charles Siler, former pastor and close friend of the family, officiating. Burial was made in the I. O. F. Cemetery here under direction of the Clark-Bigham mortuary. Serving as honorary pall-bearers were D. E. Shartel, Sr., E. S. Owsley, A. R. McNabb, J. J. Jack, Will Schumaker and Leo H. Johnson. Active pall-bearers were W. A. Ford, E. E. Newton, Dr. R. W. Corbett, Dr. H. F. Barbarick, John Wallace and E. L. Garner.
