Son of George & Sarah Cutler. James was born in England and immigrated from Liverpool to the US with his parents & siblings arriving at the Port of New York on Aug 9, 1849 aboard the ship, Wisconsin. His father, George Cutler, being a member of the British Temperance Emigration Society which was organized December 26, 1842, at Samuel Roberts' Temperance Coffee-House in Liverpool, England, had been sent out to close up its affairs. Arrived in Mazomanie, Dane County, WI in late 1849. He was a local minister of prominence.

There, James met and married on 24 Dec 1860, Sarah Jane Kerr the daughter of John & Martha Kerr, also members of the British Temperance Emigration Society who arrived in Mezomanie, WI in 1844.

During the Civil War, James Cutler enlisted 12 Nov 1863 at Berry, WI as a Private in the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry. There he attained the rank for Corporal, when he mustered out 19 Aug 1865.

George and Sarah Cutler had 7 children namely: Nellie, David, May, Sadie, Alice, Bessie, & Ella.

After the war, the family left Dane county, WI and moved to Ottowa County, KS

James Cutler was not one to stay put and would often leave his family for long periods of time. This eventually lead to the couple divorcing, sometime between 1885 & 1895.

James married a second time to Ariadna Denis and settled in Elk County, KS where he lived until his death.
