Allgaier was born on July 7, 1934, at Madison to Reinhard "Fats" and Agnes (Weide) Allgaier. He received his early education in South Dakota. He received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the S.D. School of Mines and Technology and a master of science degree in engineering electronics from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He was a registered electrical engineer in California and commander in the Civil Engineer Corps, U.S. Navy (retired).
During his 20-year U.S. Navy career, he served at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Sigonella, Sicily, Italy; and Saigon, Vietnam. Upon his retirement, he was awarded the Joint Services Commendation Medal, After his naval career, he worked for 14 years for the Bechtel Corp. in San Francisco, Calif., as a project engineer and project manager on military-related engineering projects.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia of Richardson, Texas; two daughters, Kimberly (Jim) Kreth of Shingle Springs, Calif., and Stacey (Michael) Dembroge of Alameda, Calif.; three grandchildren; three stepsons, Michael Wheeler of Alpharetta, Ga., Charles (Lynne) Wheeler of Toomsuba, Miss., and Jeffrey (Brenda) Wheeler of Frisco, Texas; and one stepgrandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gayle; and a step-son, Gregory Wheeler.
He requested that his ashes be scattered at sea and that no flowers be present at his memorial service.
