Born in Monroe, NC, Shirley grew up in Waxhaw, NC. After graduating from Waxhaw High School, she lived the balance of her life in Charlotte, NC. She had a long successful career in banking, including 31 years with Wachovia. She followed that for a brief time with the Bank of Mecklenburg. In retirement she pursued her passions of cooking, gardening, supporting her church, and taking care of her grandchildren as well as other family members.

A talented homemaker, she was an excellent cook and enthusiastic host who frequently welcomed family and friends into her home for parties and dinners to celebrate birthdays, weddings, holidays and other special occasions. (she also played the piano and even taught piano before her banking career)

Known as "Mimi" to her grandchidren, she showered them with unconditional love and support throughout their lives.

She was a generous and loving caregiver to countless relatives, neighbors and friends.

An active member of Hickory Grove UMC for over 40 years, she belonged to the Methodist Women and the Epworth Sunday School Class. She lent her support to the Methodist Youth Fellowship and to other church committees including Worship Work Area.

She will be sorely missed by those survive her: husband O'Neal Moser Carnes; one son; a daughter-in-law; sister-and-brothers-in-law; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Rhett Marcus Carnes.

Memorial service was held at HGUMC on May 8, 2011 at which time her cremains were interred into the Columbarium.

The above was taken from her obituary written by her family and printed on her "Celebration of Life" service bulletin.

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." - from Psalm 23
