Martha was the daughter of George Lovelace (1795-1869) and Nancy Morgan.

On September 19, 1853, she married William W. Shepard (1830-1861), and they had at least four children: George Washington Shepard (1854-1919 - Memorial # 95950040), Nancy Jane ("Jennie") Shepard Rice (1856-1918 - Memorial # 17341066), James Franklin Shepard (born circa 1860), and William Thomas Shepard (1861-1948).

After the death of William, Martha married Benjamin Chandler (widower of Loucinda Anderson Chandler) on May 9, 1875, and they had one daughter: Mattie Benjamin Chandler (1876-1937).

Martha died at the age of 61 years, 1 month, and 25 days.
