Richard was born in 1884 in Fairfax, Virginia. By 1900 he and his family were living in the Coles District of Prince William County, Virginia. At the age of 25 he wed the widow Hattie Abel Woolfenden. Two years later, in 1921, Richard began working at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. His career there would continue until 1950. They purchased the property between U.S. Route One and Buckman Road in 1924 and added to the property in 1933. They would live there for the rest of Richard's life. Richard would die of lung cancer in 1968. He is buried at Pohick Episcopal Church on U.S Route One near Lorton, Virginia.
