He was born May 11, 1914, in Riceford, Minn., to John and Liva (Johnson) Nerstad. His mother died when he was 2 years old and he was raised by his two aunts and uncle, Hannah, Bertha and Christ. He attended the Tawney School.
On March 1, 1941, he married Benita Jacobson in Lanesboro. She died March 18, 1980. He farmed in Preble Township, Fillmore County, until moving into Mabel in 1980. He was a resident at Heritage Grove in Harmony for two years before moving to the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel in 2005.
He was a member of the Scheie Lutheran Church of Mabel and the Sons of Norway. He had also served on the Preble Township Board for several years and in different capacities within the Scheie church. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, golfing, traveling and playing in the dartball league.
He is survived by one daughter, Carolyn (Lloyd) Heim of Oronoco; one son, Alvin (Tamie) of Mabel; four grandchildren, Amy, Kari, David and Alicia; two great-grandchildren, Reece and Brandon; and special friend and companion Edith Nerstad of Spring Grove.
He was preceded in death by two children, Llewellyn who died in 1961 and Warren who died in 1950; five brothers Olean, James, Levi, Edwin, and Eugene; and a sister, Clara.
Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 5, at the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Burial was in the Scheie Cemetery.
