was a Russian-born composer. His work included several ballets, two operas, a violin concerto, four symphonies and a flute concerto.

noted composer and conductor whose works blended ancient Chinese and modem Western themes died Monday of cancer at his home at 20 East 66th St Avshalomov who had spent much of his life in China' composed operas concertos and symphonies which were performed hv ranking artists throughout the US and' China An opera he completed in 1964 based on the life of a 13th Century Chinese emperor's concubine has not yet been produced A native of Siberia and the son of a wealthy fishay proprietor Avshalomov here was sent to Switzerland to study medicine ' but chose instead to study music at the Zurich Conservatory At the outbreak of World War I liis father sent him to China to avoid the military' draft and following the w ar Av shalomov began to write music there He once said his work was inspired by his envinmment and that he found the dialect of Chinese music to be the most natural to him He described his compositions as an "attempt at the fusion of Chinese thematic and rhythmic elements with the western media" Avshaloinov's opera "Koran Yin" had its premiere in Peking in 1925 and when it was performed in New York two years later at the Neighborhood Plav house lie was the conductor He returned to China where he conducted the Shanghai Municipal Orchestra for about three years while he continued his composing In the 1930s and 40s he conducted many of his works there most notjhly a pantomime ballot "Buddha and the Five Planets" which was placed in orchestral form at Town Hall in New York in 1954 He also wrote several symphonies a violin and piano concerto an opera "Tire Creat Wall" and a tone poem "Peking Ilutung" His compositions were conducted in the US by such artists as Arthur Rodzinski Pierre Montcux and Leopold Stokowski Avshalomov became an American citizen in 1945 and lived in law Angeles before moving to New York He is survived by' his second wife Tatiana a son Jacob a composer music teacher and conductor of he Porland Junior Symphony Orchestra in Oregon: two sisters and two grandchildren
