William McKinney was one of the first settlers in Rabun County of the Valley District at Betty's Creek between 1820 and 1830. He married Margaret Anderson, the daughter of George Washington Anderson (1779-1851) and Elizabeth Ann (Hearst) Anderson (1780-1850), and both William and Margaret migrated from Buncombe County, North Carolina to Rabun County, Georgia.
Their daughters Rachel Matilda McKinney married John B Dillard, and Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann McKinney married Albert G Dillard, both sons of James and Sarah Barnard Dillard. Georgia Sophina McKinney, daughter of Charles Lafayette and Lucinda Caroline Corn, and granddaughter of William McKinney and Margaret Anderson McKinney, married Hiram Dillard, the son of William F. Dillard of Rabun County, Georgia. William F. Dillard was also a son of James and Sarah Barnard Dillard. These three marriages make practically all descendants through the three sons of James and Sarah Barnard Dillard, also descendants of William and Margaret "Elvira" Anderson McKinney.
William and Margaret McKinney would have three sons that would be involved with the Civil War. Charles Lafayette (1863) and Doctor Tatum McKinney (1862) would lose their lives due to the Civil War. William Marshall McKinney was a 1st Corporal in the Confederate Army on August 21, 1861 and was reported as deserted on October 1, 1861.
A few months before his death, on September 7, 1859, William McKinney divided most of his real estate among his sons. By 1900 according to the Raven County census, no William McKinney family member resided in Rabun County, Georgia. The line of this family had died out or moved away except for its daughters.
The William McKinney homeplace on Betty's Creek Road faced the bottomlands of Betty's Creek at the foot of the mountains on both sides directly opposite of the present Dillard elementary school. It was used as a residence of William McKinney and his wife Margaret Anderson McKinney during their lives and their youngest child Margaret McKinney Beavert for her life following the death of Margaret McKinney Beavert on June 9th, 1916. It was used by Romulus "Rome" S. Burrell and his wife Mary Love Beavert Burrell as their home until 1935.
William and Margaret McKinney would have seven children together: George Washington, Elizabeth Ann McKinney Dillard, Rachael Matilda McKinney Dillard, Charles Lafayette, William Marshall, Doctor Tatum, and Margaret Caroline McKinney Beavert.
