Hubert Julian Philpott Sr., sixth child of Benjamin Cabell and Daisy Hundley Philpott, was born on April 28, 1923 in Lexington, North Carolina. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1940 and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1947, where he was a member of the football team from 1940 to 1941 and a member of the Carolina Playmakers. On June 18, 1948, he married Grace Davis Sutherland; they were blessed with four children. Hubert served in the U.S. Army Infantry for three years during World War II in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. Returning to Lexington, he was senior vice president of Burlington House Furniture, Lexington, and served as director of the cost and production division of Southern Furniture Manufacturers' Association. A longtime Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church, Hubert was also a member of the Lexington Rotary Club and the Educational Foundation. He served as the chairman for the board of trustees for both Lexington Memorial Hospital and Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina, as well. Hubert's additional community involvement included: chairman of District VII Morehead Scholarship Committee at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill; chairman of board of visitors at UNC-CH; member of the planning committee for Dean E. Smith Center at UNC-CH and a member of the UNC-CH Athletic Council. Mr. Philpott was preceded in death by four brothers: former Lt. Gov. of North Carolina Harvey Cloyd Philpott Sr.; Benjamin Cabell Philpott Jr.; John Robert Philpott and James Alvin Philpott and their families. Hubert passed away on September 10, 2002, in Lexington. He was survived but his wife, Grace Davis Sutherland Philpott and his sons, Hubert Julian Philpott Jr. and wife Cynthia of Sanford and Arthur Cabell Philpott and wife Marie of Calabash; his daughters, Katherine Grace Philpott and Elizabeth Ann Philpott Thompson and husband Michael, all of Lexington; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his brother, Dr. Harry Melvin Philpott of Auburn, AL. The funeral was held at the First Baptist Church with burial at Forest Hill Memorial Park.
