Velma (Rannells) Hanson was the daughter of Isaiah Wilson Rannells and Mary Jane (Bonham Rannells). Her father died when she was 4 years old. She came to Lake County in 1887 with her mother and 3 brothers, settled on Cache Creek. After graduating from the local schools, Velma entered the Lakeport Academy—completing the normal course in two years. She began her teaching career at the age of 19 and continued in that profession for 43 ½ years. She taught at various schools in Lake County and was the Principal of the Upper Lake Union School. In 1898 she was married to Rufus T Hanson. She was a life member of the Christian Church. A Past Noble Grand of the Clearlake Rebekah Lodge No. 43, a member of the Past Noble Grand Club, a member of the Lower Lake Chapter O.E.S and a life member of the Upper Lake P.T.A.She also served for several years on the county board of education. She retired in 1942 and became a member of the Lake County chapter, California Retired Teachers Association.
