NORWOOD … Catherine (Rondinelli) Alighieri, 97, of Norwood and Falmouth, died peacefully at home after a long illness on Thursday, July 10, 2008. She was born in Filadelfia, Calabria, Italy in 1911, the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Carchedi) Rondinelli. She was the sister of the late Anna Bilotta, Frances Bilotta, Laura Bretti, Maria Pelligrini and Giovanna Carchedi. She was the wife of the late Frank Alighieri. She was a lifetime member of the Sons of Italy Ladies Lodge in Norwood, where she enjoyed and participated in many social events.
In November of 1999, Catherine was featured in the Norwood Bulletin, highlighting the many transitions in her life. She and her husband Frank, were looking for a better way of life for their children and decided to leave Italy. They thought their chance had come in the late Eva Peron on the first lady of Argentina, was touring Europe at the time. She had come to invite native Argentineans to come back to their homeland. Frank Alighieri, who was born there, decided he would bring his family to Buenos Aires. Catherine wrote letters to Peron expressing concern for her family's welfare. Peron saw to it that she and her husband found employment. She did well as a seamstress, employing 10 workers, but when Peron fell ill with leukemia, and signs of social unrest were evident, Catherine and Frank felt it was time to move her family to America. She felt the United States was a better opportunity for her children. The Alighieri family arrived in the United States in 1954, settling in Norwood. Within three years of her arrival in Norwood, Catherine opened up Catherine's Specialty Shop, a dressmaking shop on Guild Street. It was the first in town, and quickly became a success. She expanded her business to include bridal gowns she designed. She later opened Terry's Bridal Shop; the business is now run by two of her daughters.
Not only was she enterprising, but she was also very creative and hugely talented. Traces of her creativity and artistic talents are seen in her crewel work (needlepoint) hangings displayed at her home and her childrens' homes. Throughout her illness, she knitted each of her great-grandchildren caps and blankets in anticipation of their arrival.
Catherine, "Nonna," was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and good friend to many. She loved spending time in her Cape home in Falmouth with her family, and where she tended to her many plants and flowers. She loved her pets like they were children. She was well loved and respected by all who knew her both personally and professionally. She will be missed every day for the rest of our lives. She had touched so many lives over the years. She will always be in our thoughts and in our hearts.
