Edna Jane "Janie", was born to William Henry and Rebecca Elizabeth Combs Ledford. Edna had fourteen siblings and they were Jesse Edward, Martha, Mary May, Flora Annie, Ida Electra, Theo, Ollie, John, Louella Rebecca, Zady, Ruth, Willie Naomi, William Henry Jr., and Wallace Ledford. Janie's father married two times after Janie's mother died in 1892.

Janie married William "Bill" Dean Spalding, November 25, 1908, in Lamar, Texas. Together they had eight children and they were Mary E, Jewel Estelle, John William, Dorothy Mae, Faye Elizabeth, "Mammie" Opal Marie, Robert Lee, and Bert Dean Spalding. Janie and Bill were farmers. At the age of 39, Janie passed away.
