The following information was provided by Betty Cardinal Welsh:
John was the Son of an "unknown" Catholic Cardinal in Yorkshire, England. He was placed in a Catholic Orphanage (House of Tendrils) where he lived a very sad life. John ran away from the orphanage at the age of 14 and boarded a potato boat coming to America. He stayed hidden until the boat was well out to sea. When he was discovered... they worked him very hard the rest of the way across. He raised his children to hate Catholics. Information provided by Betty Welsh who later had children who were Catholics.

Betty (Cardinal) Welsh ordered John's tombstone. She said she made a mistake and put the wrong state (Ohio) instead of Indiana. Company L, 82nd Indiana Infantry.
