SFC Edmond Ernest Ackermann, Jr. US Army Retired, age 71 of Villa Park passed away on Friday, February 19, 2021 at the Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove. He was born February 24, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Edmond and Anna (Butrymowicz) Ackermann.

Ed's military career began during the Vietnam conflict on November 3, 1969 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois and spanned over 40 years of service to his country. Enlisting and training to be a radio operator he was immediately sent to Vietnam. In the late 1970s he was assigned to Berlin, Germany during the Cold War era, where he spent 3 years on the East Berlin side of the wall. He then was assigned to Fort Sheridan to the US Army Reserves where most of his time was spent with the 85th Division in Arlington Heights. His last assignment was being activated full time in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Camp Atterbury, Indiana in 2005 until mandatory retirement at the age of 60 in 2009. Among his decorations he received Meritorious Service Medal, 3 Army Commendation Medals, 5 Army Achievement Medals, 2 Good Conduct Medals, 5 Army Reserve Components Achievement Medals, Army Occupation Medal, 2 National Defense Service Medals, Vietnam Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, 3 Overseas Service Ribbons, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/ M Device, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 30 year Device, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, Unit Citation with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device 1960, Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver and Wheeled Vehicle Clasp.

Beloved husband of Wanda nee: Wittwer. Loving father of Adam (Karen) Ackermann of Plainfield, Melody (Scott) Murrah of Fairbanks, Alaska, Lindsey (Edward) Berendt of Rolling Meadows and Cory Ackermann (Sarah Brackmann) of Lombard. Fond grandfather of Aubrey, Calvin and Raife Ackermann, Tyler, Zak and Lylah Murrah, Mason and Colton Berendt. His best friend since kindergarten Rick Beauchamp of Aurora and 2 sisters Mary Ackermann and Virginia Wind of Door County, Wisconsin.

Memorial visitation Wednesday, May 12, 2021 from 11:00 A.M. until time of memorial service Noon at the Seguin & Symonds Funeral Home, 858 Sheridan Road, Highwood. Rev. Andrea Wittwer officiating. Interment and Military Honors will follow at 1:00 P.M. in the Fort Sheridan National Cemetery, Highwood, Illinois.
