MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, January 25, 1894, page 5. "HAWKINS – As announced in last week's paper J. A. Hawkins died on last Wednesday morning, Jan. 17, 1894, at 8:30. He was born near Hanover, Columbiana Co., Ohio, Nov. 24, 1854. His mother died when he was about ten years of age. He professed religion when about twenty years of age, and became a member of the Christian church. He came west, and was married to Clara B. Sawer Nov. 26th 1885, at the home of her parents, near Ludell, Kansas. They made their home in State Center, Iowa, until May 1892, when they moved to Maxwell, where they made their home, he buying the barber shop in this place. He had been in failing health for quite awhile, and yet none of us expected him to go so soon. His trouble was consumption. The funeral took place on Friday at 11 a. m., from the C. P. church, being in charge of the Odd Fellows. The order marched from their Hall to the residence and escorted the remains to the church, which was filled to its utmost capacity. The music was by the C. P. choir, with Mrs. F. W. Hill at the organ, Rev. Curtis read the scriptures and offered prayer, Rev. Ferguson then made a short address on the life and character of the deceased, showing the value of such a man to the community, and the consequent loss we have sustained in his death. The beautiful and impressive burial service of the Odd Fellow's order was then read by J. W. Maxwell, Rev. Ferguson acting as Chaplain. The remains were then looked upon by the vast concourse of people present, after which they were conveyed to the cemetery and laid to rest according to the ritual of the order, J. G. Wells serving as Marshall. The first intention of Mrs. H. was to bury at State Center, but afterwards concluded to bury here. This made it possible to change the time from that named in last week's paper. The deep sympathy of this community goes out to Mrs. H. in her heavy sorrow. Their only little daughter, Edith Pearl, died March 2, 1889, aged two and one half years. So Mrs. H. has no family of her own left. Mrs. D. McQuilkin, a sister to Mr. H. and living at Boone, with her son Harvey, arrived on Tuesday and were with him when he died. Mr. H. was a man of sterling worth. He made his shop a model of neatness and a place of order. Nothing unbecoming was ever tolerated there. He was kind, considerate and gentlemanly to all. All were his friends. Our community feels very much the loss. To his bereaved companion we extend our tender regard, and assure her of our abiding interest in her welfare. Her parents live near Atwood, Kansas. It is hoped she may continue to make her home with us. Mr. H. had but just finished a neat and beautiful home when he was taken sick. He was tenderly devoted to his wife, and it was his highest delight to add to her comfort. In his death every worthy enterprise in Maxwell has lost a true friend and well-wisher."" "I desire to express my heartfelt thanks to the neighbors and friends and members of the Order, for their kindness during the illness and death of my dear husband. Mrs. Clara Hawkins."
