Birth and death dates taken from "A Survey of Cemeteries in Chambers County, Alabama," published by the Chattahoochee Valley Historical Society. Daughter Sarah ("Sallie") Callaway's 1923 death certificate, filed in Muscogee County, Ga., indicates that Jonathan Callaway was born in Jasper County, Ga.
According to the Chambers County cemetery survey, Jonathan Callaway and wife Civility are buried on the old Callaway Plantation homesite, which is approximately 8 miles from Lanett, Ala.
The federal census of 1850 shows Civility and Jonathan Callaway in the Cusseta community of Chambers County, Ala., with the following children: Martha (age 18), Sarah (age 16), Zachary (age 14), Claiborne (age 12), Ella (age 10), Hilliard (age 6), and Georgia (age 3).
Jonathan Callaway's parents were Joshua Callaway and his third wife, Elizabeth Williamson, who were married in Jasper County, Ga., in 1804. "Callaways of Western Wilkes County, Georgia," an exhaustive study published in 2007 by Samuel Taylor Geer, should be consulted for more genealogical data concerning this family.
