Ruth Roberts Schilling January 13, 1917 - October 14, 2007 Ruth Roberts Schilling, 90, a resident of Sonoma, California died on October 14, 2007, surrounded by her family in Spokane, Washington where she had a second home. Ruth was born in Orland, CA on January 13, 1917 to Maude King Roberts and Charles William Roberts. She was raised in Thermalito and Oroville, CA where her family raised sheep, and later farmed rice near Yuba City, CA. One of her fondest memories was riding horseback with her father to summer sheep camps in the Feather River back country, camping, fishing, and tending sheep. Her family worked hard to survive the Depression, and she graduated from Oroville Union High School in 1935. She then went on to attend Chico State College for a year and a half. She decided that nursing was her calling and transferred to the Mount Zion School of Nursing in San Francisco, graduating in 1939 as a Registered Nurse. Upon graduation, she married her high school classmate, William (Bill) Joseph Schilling and was employed as a Registered Nurse at Mount Zion General Hospital. Like others of the 'Greatest Generation,' Bill served in the Army during World War II and Ruth worked as a nurse. After the war, she and Bill settled in Mill Valley, started a family, and became active citizens in their community. In order to continue her commitment to nursing and remain close to her children, Ruth worked as a school nurse in the Marin County School District and in private medical practices in Marin. She later worked as a nurse at Marin General Hospital, Ross Hospital, and Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in San Rafael, ultimately retiring from Kaiser in 1977 after a 38-year career as a Registered Nurse. Ruth served on the Strawberry School PTA and was active in Girl Scouts, Little League, and the Mount Zion Alumni Association. She was a 49-year member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Ruth lead a life of service, volunteering her time at Mt. Carmel School, Marin Catholic High School, and numerous charitable healthcare organizations. Ruth was a lifetime member of the Outdoor Art Club in Mill Valley. Ruth was an avid reader, artist, hat maker, seamstress, and enjoyed golf, tennis, and gardening. In retirement, she and Bill traveled around the United States, South America, and Europe. She was also a lifetime, avid San Francisco 49er and Giants fan. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William in 2005; siblings, Joseph Roberts of Yuba City, Virginia Waste of Belvedere, Dorothy Corbin of Roseville, and Charlotte Roberts of Oroville. She is survived by her son, Stephen Schilling (Deidre) of Bakersfield and Lucinda Whaley (Robert) of Spokane, Washington; three granddaughters, Christina Chiovari (Roy), Mari Schilling, and Elaine Whaley; step-grandchildren, Harper Tripp and Hunt Whaley; three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends of all ages. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, October 29, at 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 3 Oakdale Ave., Mill Valley. Interment will follow at 12:00 p.m., on October 30, at the Sutter Cemetery in Sutter, California, near her original family homestead. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to Garces Memorial High School, 2800 Loma Linda Drive, Bakersfield, California 93305, or the charity of your choice.
