Excerpt from The Savannah Morning News, December 14, 1936:
MILLEN, Ga. Dec. 13 - A head-on collision between two light automobiles this morning about 11 o'clock, seven miles south of Millen on State Highway No. 23, claimed the life of Mrs. M. G. Johnson, wife of Sheriff Johnson of Jenkins county, and seriously injured four others and probably one of them will prove fatal.
Sheriff Johnson was proceeding southward towards Butts on the state highway when he was met by another car being driven by Willie Douglas .Just before the two cars met, the Douglas car attempted to dodge a hog which was crossing the highway and ran head-on into the Johnson car. Both cars were a tangled mess of wreckage and to everyone it seemed miraculous that any escaped death.
Tom Harper, of Millen, was proceeding southward along the highway and came upon the wreck a moment or so after it happened and hurried back to Millen for medical aid. When physicians and ambulances arrived Mrs. Johnson was dead, having had a large portion of her scalp severed.
Sheriff Johnson was driving and appeared seriously injured internally. The extent of his injuries late today had not been determined because X-ray pictures were being taken. He is suffering terribly from chest and head wounds. Sheddie, young son of Sheriff and Mrs. Johnson, was sitting in the rear seat of their car and suffered a broken leg besides other minor injuries.
Willie Douglas, driver of the other car, is not expected to live; having suffered severe internal injuries. It is believed that several bones have been broken. Rooster Williams, his companion at the time, suffered injuries but the extent was not immediatery known. The car being driven by Douglas was a 1929 model and is a total wreck. It would be hard to conceive how anyone could escape death after seeing the telescoped machine.
Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be held at Rosemary Church near Millen at 3 p.m. Monday. Rev. T. R. Harvill, pastor of the Millen Baptist Church, and Rev. W. E. Scott, Methodist pastor, will officiate. Pall bearers will be J. H.Simpson, Charles Anderson, Math Gay, L. P. Strickland, William Woodrum, Mills Satter, Louis Taylor and R. Y. Lane. Burial will be in the church yard.
The community has been tremendously shocked over the untimely death of Mrs. Johnson and everyone is extending sympathy to all the victims of the wreck.
