Mathias Hoffman, another of the aged and esteemed pioneer residents of Boone County, passed away at the home of his son, Daniel Hoffman, south of the city, at 10:00 o’clock Thursday evening, December 30th, after a week’s illness with pneumonia. The funeral services were held from the home at 1:30 o’clock New Year’s Day conducted by the Rev. Hohanshelt and attended by many sorrowing relatives and friends. The music was furnished by Mrs. Charles Higgins, Miss Flora Ashen either and D.B. Ashen either, with Miss Helen Bonnard at the organ. The remains were laid to rest in the Boone cemetery near Luther beside his wife, who died many years ago.

He then returned to Indiana and married Miss Nancy Nutt, also a native of that state, and in the fall of 1849 they came to Boone county, took up their residence upon the land and have made their home here ever since. July 2nd, 1886, his wife died and he has since made his home with his children. To them were born 13 children, five of whom have preceded him in death. Matthias' homestead is south of Boone, Iowa on the east edge of the Ledges State Park. The house has collapsed and the old brick chimney was knocked down and most of the bricks removed. Portions of the walls still stood in 2004 as well as the foundation of rocks still cemented together. The Squire Boone Cemetery is south and slightly east of Boone, Iowa where many of the Hoffman's, Boone's and other families that homesteaded Iowa.
