Boonville, Sept. 11 — Mr. and Mrs. Fred Phillips received a telegram from the War Department, Saturday night, stating that their son, Cpl. Clifford Fred Phillips died on Aug. 24 in a hospital in England from wounds received in France on June 15.
Cpl. Phillips, the first selectee from Boonville, entered the service on Jan. 14, 1941; he received his training at Fort Bragg, N. C. and two years ago was sent overseas. He saw action in North Africa, Tunisia, Sicily and France and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Oak Leaf Cluster and four stars for Campaign Service.
He was wounded twice, first in the invasion of Sicily, and after being released from the hospital, he again entered active service, and was wounded in France on June 15, and had since that time been confined to the hospital; he was thought at first to be recovering from his wounds, when his condition changed, and his people were notified to that effect.
He was born in Boonville on May 17, 1918, a son of Fred and Laura Clark Phillips; he attended Boonville High School, graduating in the class of '36; he attended the Baptist Church; he was also a member of the Boonville Fire
Department. Before entering the service he was employed at the Hess Pharmacy in Boonville for five years.
Surviving besides his parents are five sisters: Mrs. Albert Kranbuhl, Mrs. Ralph Nugent, Mrs. Joseph Bartlotte and Miss Elizabeth Phillips, all of Boonville and Mrs. Leo Fuller of Rome, several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held at the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Ruthven S. Chalmers will officiate. Rome Daily Sentinel, Monday Evening, September 11, 1944
