Graveside services were held for Marwyn Freeman, 68, of Pomona on October 30, 2002 at Oak Lawn Cemetery in West Plains, Mo. Evangalist Lynn Hixon officiating. Pop died at Ozark Medical Center October 24, 2002 at 5:45pm. He was born September 6, 1934 in Jasper County Iowa to William and Ethel Perin Freeman. He received his education in the schools of Baxter and Exline Iowa and on April 21, 1956 was married to Ruthie Spilman in Ottumwa Iowa. Pop was a farmer while in Iowa nd after moving to Missouri worked for A.R. SChaller construction Company laying water and sewer lines in Missouri and Kansas. He then went to work for the City of West Plains as a backhoe operator for the Street Department and Water and Sewer Department. For 12 years or so Pop was the only backhoe operator to open graves at Oak Lawn Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Ruthie, one daughter Virginia ("Sam") Gentry and husband Jerry. One grandson Tim Gentry and wife Carrie, two step grandsons, Nick and Shaun Gentry. Three sister in laws, Florence Freeman, Jane Hargrove and husband Jim, and Thelma Spilman, several neices and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Russell (Cobb) Freeman and Harold Freeman. Pop's is the only grave that has been opened without a fee in the history of the cemetery. Larry Coffman and the rest of the cemetery crew donated all their time and services in honor of him.
