Obituary: "The Chicago Heights Star" April 13, 1956

"Rev. Hiram F. Lawler Dies; Rites Tomorrow"

Friend throughtout the community as well as members of the First Methodist Church, Chicago Heights, were saddened yesterday morning to learn of the sudden death of the Rev. Hiram F. Lawler, 85, pastor emeritus of the church. He resided at 135 West Main Street, Chicago Heights, IL.

Although the clergyman had been in failing health the past few years, he maintained an active interest in church affairs and current events. Only Wednesday he gave the invocation at the weekly meeting of the Chicago Heights Kiwanis club, of which he was a revered member.

The Rev. Mr. Lawler, a patient, kindly gentleman, had a host of friends, among them many members and pastors of other denominations. He was a past president of the Chicago Heights Ministers Association.

Besides his son, Corporate Counsel Ernest Lawler, and a grandson, Richard Lawler of Chicago Heights, he is survived by a daughter, Miss Helen Lawler, music supervisor in the public school system of Moundsville, West Virginia; a sister, Miss May Lawler of Chicago Heights; and a brother Louis, of Green Valley, ILL. Mrs. Lawler died in 1939.

"BORN IN GREEN VALLEY"
Born January 14th, 1871, at Green Valley, the Rev. Mr. Lawler received his formal eduacation at Northwestern University and Garrett Biblical Institute, Evanston, ILL. During his senior year at Northwestern he won recognition as a football player, and subsequently he retained an interest in athletics.

Married to Miss Mabel Bunten at the turn of the century, the minister accepted early charges in rural areas. His first larger pastorate was at Highland Park. This was followed by others in Arlington Heights, Libertyville, Downers Grove, Ingleside Methodist Church in Chicago, Mount Carroll, Belvidere, Ottawa, Princeton, Fourth Street Methodist Church in Aurora, Chicago Heights, Franklin Park, and in later years in small communities where there were temporary vacancies.

"CAME HERE IN 1931"
The rev. Mr. Lawler came to Chicago Heights in 1931 and despite the financial depression at that time the church experienced a substantial growth in membership. To help solve the church's financial difficulties, he voluntarily took a cut in salary. During his pastorate, the church established a well-organized and popular daily vacation Bible school.

Leaving Chicago Heights in 1936, the pastor took a congregation in Franklin Park, exchanging with Dr. John Williamson, who succeeded him in Chicago Heights. Later he returned to his second charge in Aurora before retiring in 1941. During World War II he conducted services at Thornton Methodist Church.

"SERVICES TOMORROW"
A member of the Masonic Lodge, the Rev. Mr. Lawler maintained his membership in the Consistory in Chicago and the Knights Templar in Princeton

Masonic reites will be held tonight at 8 o'clock at the Spindler-Koelling Chapel. The services will be conducted by Chicago Heights Lodge 851, AF & AM.

Funeral services are scheduled tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Rev. Milo Vondraacek will condust rites from the First Methodist Church.

Interment and services will be held at the Green Valley Methodist church Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial will take place at the Green Valley Cemetery.
