Charles Donald Action, 88, passed away peacefully in his home in Duncanville, Texas, on December 31, 2020.
Charles was born in Cleveland, Texas, to Myrle and Charles C. Acton on February 18, 1932. The son of lifetime school teachers, his parents taught together in a one-room schoolhouse in Hickory Grove, Texas. At age 13, he moved with his parents to Duncanville, Texas, where he lived for the rest of his life and met his childhood sweetheart, Mona Fay Plummer. Charles loved playing football, basketball, and baseball during his high school years and upon graduation, moved to Washington D.C. to work in the fingerprint division of the FBI.
He returned to Duncanville and married Mona on February 20, 1951 and also joined the Air National Guard that same year. Together, he and Mona were faithful members of the First United Methodist Church of Duncanville and he remained a devoted son, husband, son-in-law, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather for the almost 70 years of their marriage.
Charles was an active member in Duncanville’s civic and social life, serving as President of HeritageBanc from 1962 until 1989, and later also served as President of Duncanville National Bank until his retirement. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and the Duncanville Chamber of Commerce, and was honored as Man of the Year in Duncanville three times. He was also active in the sports community of Duncanville, helping to found the youth girls softball association and serving as the most enthusiastic spectator at the sporting events of his daughter and grandchildren.
After his retirement from the banking industry, he focused on a lifelong interest in the construction business, and built a number of homes in the Dallas area. He eventually was honored and took great pride in working with Builders of Hope, a nonprofit organization specializing in building strong neighborhoods for all through quality, affordable housing.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Myrle and Charles C. Acton and is survived by his loving wife, Mona; his daughter Angela Cummings; his daughter Valerie McElroy and her husband, Pat; his grandchildren, Remy Davis and her husband, Ryan; Trent McElroy and his wife, Natalie; and Shea Cummings; and great-grandchildren, Claire, Macy, and Emmeline Davis; and Haddie and Henry McElroy.
The memorial service will be held at Little Bethel Memorial Park on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at 2:00 p.m.
