Before the Civil War, Robert worked as a clerk. He enlisted as a Private in Company "A", 46th Virginia Infantry on 21 April 1861. He was captured, along with much of his regiment, at Roanoke Island, North Carolina on 8 February 1862 and was paroled 13 days later. He worked for several months in 1863 on special detail to recruit men behind enemy lines. He surrendered with the regiment at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.

After the War, he worked as a bookkeeper and merchant. He apparently never married, and spent several of his last years at the Old Soldier's Home in Richmond. He died at 511 N. 7th Street of "Cerebral Apoplexy," per Cemetery records. His grave in his mother's plot, near his parents, is unmarked.
