John was the fourth of five children born to George and Mariah (Peck) Moose. He married (1) Mary Etta Walker and they had eight children: William Fritch,Morgan Debery, Martha Lula, Mary Anna, George Henry, John Wade, James Adolphus and Arthur Farel. After Mary's death in 1901, he married (2) Julia C. Barringer in 1903.
