John E. Spencer, age 80, died Sunday, August 18, 2013, at his home in Dorset, Ohio, after an extended illness.

He was the seventh child of Kline and Nellie Spencer in a family of ten. John had many friends and as a teen loved to dance and belonged to the Glee Club.

At age 16, he earned his pilot license and owned his own plane in which he thrilled his family and friends with his aerial maneuvers. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served his country until the end of the Korean War.

He married Shirley Klingensmith and they had three sons, John Jr., Donald and Todd Spencer.

John enjoyed teaching at the Ashtabula County Technical School for several years. Later, he opened a small engine shop and built his own plane.

John is survived by his wife; his three sons; his daughter-in-law, Marina; and granddaughter, Sasha. He is also survived by his sisters, Claudia Jewell, Janet Smith, Joan Burns and Sandra Hill; and brother, Donald Spencer.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Jean Brockett and Ruth Boggs; and brothers, Victor Spencer and Robert Spencer.
