Condit S. Atkinson, 66, former music director in Highland Park and the Metuchen school systems, died at Middlesex General Hospital, New Brunswick. He had resided at 114 Donaldson St. Born in Highland Park, son of the late Condit and Mary Jane Atkinson he attended Rutgers University and the New Jersey Law School before graduating from the Julliard School of Music in New York. He served as director of music for Highland Park for 10 years before assuming the same position in the Metuchen school system in 1945. Mr. Atkinson served there until his retirement three years ago. A former borough councilman, he served in that capacity in Highland Park from 1947 to 1949. Mr. Atkinson founded the Middlesex County Band School and during the '20s and '30s, he had a band, "Connie's Orchestra," which played throughout Middlesex and Union counties. For five years, the band was featured at the Berkeley-Carteret Hotel in Asbury Park. A member and former officer of Local 204 of the American Federation of Musicians, Brunswick Lodge 324 of the Elks and the National and New Jersey Music Educators associations. He is survived by his wife, the former Marie Beckmann; a son, Condit R., director of music in Highland Park schools; two sisters, Mrs. William Baschong of Santa Monica, Calif., and Mrs. Bernard Josephson of New York City; and two grandchildren A funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Quackenboss Funeral Home, 156 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, with the Rev. Donald Phillips, pastor of the Trinity Methodist Church of High-land Park, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Paul Evans, former pastor of the church. Interment will be in the Reformed Church Cemetery, Spotswood.
