Civil War Union Army Officer. Serving under the alias of "John Eagan", he was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 11, 1861, and was wounded at the June 30, 1862 Battle of New Market Crossroads. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on May 1, 1863, he fought in the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, where he was captured by Confederate forces. Exchanged, he was wounded again at Petersburg, Virginia on June 18, 1864, and was honorably discharged on December 10, 1864.
