Merrils was married to Edna Leilla Hall in 1907. They had a son, Leslie Hall Boyd (01/08/1909 - 08/02/1994). Merrils and Edna later divorced.

In 1928 he married Josephine Johnson. They had a daughter, Louella on Feb 15, 1930 while living in MN. Later they moved to CA and then to IA. Merrils and Jo operated a hotel in Northwood, IA for many years.
