Irene was a direct descendant of John and Betty More's Jean line. She was the eldest of four children born to Abraham L. Ackerman and Nellie Augusta Smith Ackerman. Irene was raised initially at Rockland Lake, New York. The family relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey about 1899 where her father was a carpenter and they resided in her maternal grandfather's home. The family relocated to Paterson, New Jersey about 1910 where her father was a department store cabinet maker. The family relocated to Prospect Park, a borough of Paterson, about 1915 where her father was a building trades carpenter. Irene had never married.
