Alice Jean Ballard, 93, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family March 9, 2021. A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Jean in her always unassuming manner spent her entire life loving her family unconditionally, maintaining an ever positive outlook, staying judgement-free and kind to others, always abiding her faith, and just being there to help wherever there was a need.

Jean is remembered for her traditional Hoosier comfort food cooking, for her sense of humor, for her love of books on tape, for her love of many pets, for volunteering at the Downey Avenue Food Bank, and for the circle of friends she formed in high school, AKA, the “Varga Girls”.

After high school, Jean studied art at the Herron School and made good use of her artistic talents throughout her life. Having spent decades as the receptionist for the Warren Township School’s administrative office, Jean developed a broad network of close work friends. During this time, Jean raised her daughter and son as a single mother on a very tight budget. If anything, Jean was a habitual "giver", never asking for anything for herself.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Ebert (Kim); son, John Garnier (Mary); and grandchildren, Rachel Gilboy (Peter), Robin Ludlow (Clay), Spencer Garnier, Paris Garnier and George Garnier. In recent years, the light of Jean’s life were her great-grandchildren, Eli Gilboy, Cooper Gilboy, Sam Ludlow, Alice Bee Ludlow (namesake), and little Rosie Grace Ludlow.
