Michael Byron Zajas
November 12, 1940 - March 9, 2021

The man, the myth, the legend, Michael Byron Zajas lived his 80 years in a true hero fashion. As always, Mike was surrounded by his family when he gained his angel wings on March 9, 2021. He may have left this world, but the legacy that he left behind will live on with his family forever.

Mike was born to Buck and Luty on November 12, 1940 in Detroit. It was here, with his eight siblings that his family man legacy began. On May 10, 1962 he married his high school sweetheart Kathleen Zajas (Belanger). In their unforgettable almost 59 years of marriage, they devoted their lives to their three children, nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Mike graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes in River Rouge MI, and then served in the U.S. Military. After being stationed in Korea, he worked in the paper industry until retirement.

As a proud Polish man Mike enjoyed Polkas and large family meals. He also had a sweet tooth, something that his grandchildren will always remember. They never left Papas room without a handful of sugar! His vacations were spent with family at the cabin on Black Lake trolling for walleyes. It was here, and everywhere, that he did what he enjoyed most, instilled the love and importance of family and family traditions. At home, his time was well spent watching kids enjoy his outdoor paradise and cheering on Notre Dame Football with his wife and daughter.

Here on earth to continue his legacy is his loving wife, Kathleen Zajas, Children Jimmy (Tara) Zajas, Mickey (Lori) Zajas, Julie Zajas, Son-in-law Rod Daniels. Grandchildren Brian (Fiancé Holly) Lowry, Chris (significant other Michelle), Brandi (Craig) Sperberg, Justin (April) Woods, Mitchell Zajas, Holli (Levi) Hahn, Jacob Zajas, Katie (significant other, Nate) Zajas and Abby Zajas. Great-Grandchildren Emma, Aubrey, Ethan, Alivia, Brock, Baylee, Adam, Brea, Collin, Aubree, Caden and Chloe. Siblings Judy Marceau, Mary (Jim) Cosgrove, Steffie (significant other Stash) Bartha, Jerry (Debbie) Zajas, and Janet (Bob) Guarino, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Bill Cosgrove, Renee Yantz, Gene and Claudette Matthews, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Celebrating with him in heaven are his parents Jerome and Julia Zajas, mother-in-law and father-in-law Ernest and Lillian Belanger, sister Patty Cosgrove, brother Joseph Zajas, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Barb Popyk, Frenchy Marceau, Barb and Mike Callahan and Tony Yantz.

The family would like to send out a special heartfelt thank you to Gene and Claudette Mathews and children, St Vincent Hopsital and Compassus Hospice for their amazing care and support. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date.
