His birth date is derived from the bible of his son, James Thomas "Tom" Coats (1847-1923), founder and namesake of Coats, North Carolina. He may be the William Coats who died October 6, 1899, and whose obituary appeared in the October 13, 1899 edition of the "Smithfield Herald." The obituary states that this William Coats died age 60 years, but this may be in error.
