Merlin G. "Red" Gusewelle, age 94, of Edwardsville, Illinois, entered in to heaven on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at Meridian Village Care Center in Glen Carbon. He was born November 21, 1926, on the family farm in Pin Oak Township, Illinois, the son of the late Arthur & Wilma (Begemann) Gusewelle.
Red was a 3rd generation farmer of his family farm in Edwardsville. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gloria Faith (Beck) Gusewelle, whom he married on April 14, 1951 at the Grantfork United Church of Christ in Grantfork, Illinois. Red is also survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Autenrieb & husband Kevin of Edwardsville, Marla Faith Bockhorst & husband Brad of Lake Forest, California; four grandchildren, Andrew Autenrieb & wife Angela, Lori Blumberg & husband Robert, Ryan Bockhorst & wife Sarah, Alex Bockhorst; six great grandchildren, Wyatt Autenrieb, Lucy Autenrieb, Lainey Blumberg, Sam Blumberg, Chloe Blumberg, & Conrad Bockhorst. He was preceded in death by one brother Justin Gusewelle.
Red was a member of the St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Belleville, Illinois, and of the New Life Club at St. Matthew. He was also a member of the Madison County Farm Bureau, Prime Timers of the Madison County Farm Bureau, the Pin Oak Township Sr. Club & the EHS Class of 1944. Red loved spending time outside cutting his grass, trimming the trees and taking care of his farm. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially dancing and traveling with his wife Gloria.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 4, 2021, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, at the funeral home with Rev. Grant Armstrong officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. The family request memorials to St. Matthew Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois in care of Weber & Rodney Funeral Home.
