Edwin C. Saxton

Edwin C. “Pete” Saxton, 85, Sugar creek, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1991, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Saxton was born in St. Joseph, Mo., and had lived in this area since 1925. He was a street and water superintendent from 1942 to 1969 and was assistant superintendent of public works from 1969 until he retired in 1971. He was part-time building and sewer inspector for the city of Sugar Creek from 1971 to 1979. Earlier he was a freelance photographer for the Kansas City Journal-Post and The Kansas City Star. He worked for North American Aviation during World War II.

He was a life member of the American Public Works Association, and received its Samuel A. Greeley government service award in 1976. He was chairman of the Citizens Civic Relief Fund for 42 years. He was a 33-year member of the Community Services League, was its former treasurer and formerly served on its fiancé committee.

He was former chairman of the Jackson County Welfare Commission and served on the Jackson County Council on Aging from 1975 to 1988.He served on the special transportation advisory committee for the Mid-America Regional Council from 1979 to 1988. He was former coordinator to the chairman of transportation in Sugar Creek.

Mr. Saxton was founder and administrator of the Hospital Equipment program, which provided medical equipment to Sugar Creek residents at no cost. He was a member and former president of the Business and Civic Club, a 20-year member of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, and a former member of the Law Enforcement Division of the Professional Photographers Association.

His survivors include his wife, Laura Mae Saxton of the home; and a daughter, Laurel Ann Bonine, Sugar Creek.

Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at newcomer’s Noland Road Chapel; burial in Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City.
