Rodney was a 1978 graduate of Garden High School and attended Berea College. He was the retired owner and operator of Shortt Flooring for over 35 years, a past assistant coach for Grundy High School and enjoyed fishing.
Rodney was the current President of the Buchanan County Historical Society, co-founder and Vice President of the Southwest Virginia Genealogy Club and was co-founder and Director of the Buchanan County Historical Museum. He received national recognition and the Distinguished Service Award from the Sons of Confederate Veterans for his efforts funding and setting headstones for Confederate Veterans. He was of Christian faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Shortt; three sisters Hope Shortt Shortridge, Karen Shortt, and Janet Shortt Ratliff, maternal grandparents Mildren and Lexie Lowe Breedlove, paternal grandparents Tom and Bertha Palmer Shortt.
Survivors include his sons Dylan James Shortt and girlfriend Reagan Annlee, and Lukas Ryan Shortt and girlfriend Melody Brown; one brother Dale Shortt; two brothers-in-law Belfred (Joyce) Shortridge and Jim Ratliff; step-mother Charlene Shortt; two half-brothers Mickey (Jennifer) Shortt and Rick Shortt; half-sisters Tami Mitchell, and Vicki Hearl; Rita Stacy his girlfriend, best friend, and caregiver and adopted step-children Julia and Ryan Jackson.
Funeral service for Rodney B. Shortt will be held at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel of Keen Mountain, VA, Sunday, February 21, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with Evangelist Mike Rife officiating. Burial will follow in the Shortt Family Cemetery on Shortts Gap Road, Raven, VA.
Active pallbearers will be his family and friends.
