He was one of eight children born to the late John William and Nellie Edith (Peters) Bales. Melvin was born on Thursday, December 23, 1937 in Martinsville, Indiana.

On July 27, 1957, Melvin married the love of his life, N. Shirley (Goss) Bales. The two were inseparable and blessed with two sons, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Melvin was a dedicated employee of Kroger for over 40 years. His career began in Martinsville shortly after graduation and ended in the late 1990’s after many years in Mooresville, where he retired as the meat department manager and meat cutter.

Melvin’s family has requested a private visitation and service to protect family and friends from the spread of COVD-19. He will be laid to rest in Friendship Park Cemetery in Paragon, Indiana. Arrangements have been entrusted to Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville.
