Jim was born and raised in the Sacramento County area, son of Alvin Clark Bean, a native Minnesotan and poultry and cattle rancher, and Elinor Edith Mispley, a native Californian and great-granddaughter of one of the original Forty-Niners.

The family moved to Rio Linda when Jim was three years old, and bought a chicken ranch.
They moved back to Sacramento when he was in the third grade, and put the ranch up for sale.
Since they were not able to sell the ranch, they built a new house and moved back to Rio Linda when Jim was about 13 (around 1951).
He went to Grant Union High School in Del Paso Heights from 1953 to 1956.

He went to the University of California at Davis from 1954 to 1961 (with time off in between for active duty in the Coast Guard). He graduated with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Production in 1961.

He met his future wife, Andrea, while they were both attending U.C. Davis.
They were married in 1961 in Sacramento.

He served in the Coast Guard from 1959 to 1967. The total enlistment was for eight years. Seven and a half years of this time was in the Coast Guard Reserves, and the other six months were active duty. He was discharged on April 12th, 1967.

He went to work for Hunt Foods in 1961 as a Fieldman in Northern California, until the fall of 1963.
Then he went to work for The Dow Chemical Co. in October of 1963 in agricultural field research for the Western States for nine months, and then transferred to Agricultural Sales.
They (Jim and Andrea) lived in Rio Vista at the time.
Dow moved them back to Midland, Michigan for about five or six months training, and then he was assigned to the order desk in the San Francisco sales office for a year.
He then went into outside sales for three different assignments in Northern California, Arizona and the Imperial Valley of California, Idaho, and Eastern Oregon.
Dow created a new job (Technical Services and Development - T.S. &D.), and the family moved to Issaquah, Washington, where he worked out of the Bellevue office, which covered Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
Next Jim and the family moved to Geneseo, Illinois, and he covered the State of Iowa in T.S. & D.
They moved to Davis, California, where he covered the six Western States in T.S. & D. for Professional Pest Control Products. This consisted of working with Universities to get data to register new products and new uses, and conducting product training for sales people and customers.

Throughout his career, Jim's work took him to many different countries, including: Mexico, Canada, Chile and Saipan.

Jim and the family spent a lot of quality time in the great outdoors. Whether it was trolling along for trout, pitching the family tent, sitting around the campfire roasting s'mores, or splitting firewood, every memory was cherished, from the first to the last.

He was a true do-it-yourselfer, from home improvement, to cutting and chopping his own firewood, to maintaining his vehicles, to trouble-shooting personal computers.

After retirement, Jim and Andrea enjoyed their travels, visiting many countries, including: Russia, China, Japan, Egypt, Italy, Polynesia and Spain.

He passed away on November 17, 2020 in Roseville, leaving behind a sister, a wife, a daughter, two sons, and four grandchildren who miss him dearly.
