He was born in Johnson County,Kentucky the son of Chatman "Chat" Tackett and Penola Howard. He had six brothers,William McKinley, Jesse, Henry, Neal, Cecil, Jimmie, and one sister, Bessie. On October 1, 1938 he married Katie Katherine Ratliff the daughter of Jesse Ratliff and Mildred Spencer. Their children are; Arlie Leroy Tackett, Charles Tackett, James Paul Tackett, Bernard Ray Tackett, Lloyd Tackett, Floyd Tackett and Stella (Tackett) Hamilton. He enlisted into the Armed Forces on October 15, 1940 and served in the Infantry Branch of the National Guards in World War II.
